The chair of Foggy Bottom’s local governing body is a registered sex offender in Florida, and court records reveal a criminal history he had not publicly disclosed in D.C. before this week.
Joel Causey – the highest-ranking official on the Foggy Bottom and West End Advisory Neighborhood Commission, which represents residents on and near campus – was convicted in 1998 for a sexual offense involving a boy under 16 years old in Jacksonville, Florida between 1995 and 1996, according to Duval County, Florida court documents. ANC commissioners said the public should have a right to know if their elected representatives have a criminal history, even in another state.
D.C. has no law requiring public officials divulge their criminal background. Causey is not listed on the District’s sex offender registry.
This just showcases a fact I’ve known for a long time. Sex offender registries are hardly utilized by the public.
Hatchet is about right for the paper seeing they are doing a hatchet job on him, no holds barred. If there is a good reason to go after FLA law on registration for those outside of the state, this is another good one to add to the pile.
“Transparency”??
“D.C. has no law requiring public officials divulge their criminal background. Causey is not listed on the District’s sex offender registry.”
What transparency do they want?? How about the transparency that’s relevant…. open public meetings, open competitive bidding for contracts, disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest?? In other words, the transparency that directly relates to his position and the job duties of that position!! 😒
(Do I get my panties in a twist because my City Permit officer was once arrested for a DUI violation?? No, I don’t! Because it is irrelevant to his public position and his work as it relates to me. 😤)
Isn’t “divulge” essentially “demanded speech?”
Is the” right to know” found(ed) in the constitution?
Is ANC a recognized government entity by the FL constitution?
It’s certainly not in the federal. At any rate their authority is limited. Foggy bottoms is one heck of a funny name though!
Surely appropriate for a community of older gassy folks.
”ANC” as in African National Congress? I didn’t know they had a chapter in Floriduh. Oh wait, they’re not in Floriduh, they’re in D.C. Yet, the article leads people to believe they’re in Floriduh, because the man was convicted in Floriduh’s Duval County which also uses the initials “D.C.” But seriously, this is why I hate acronyms
“I really don’t care,” he said. “I think anybody who looks at your record of 25 years ago is a horrible person in that sense anyways.”
Gotta give this guy credit for not mincing words. After further reading the article, and now knowing for sure that Foggy Bottom is in D.C. and not Floriduh🤦🏼♀️ I’ve learned that I can move to D.C. to be off the registry 🙏 But who wants to be around the same people that makes these dumb laws.
“Causey said the reports from others who came forward after his sexual battery charges were “bullsh*t,” and he alleged they wanted financial compensation from his family, whom he said had a “sh*tload” of money”
I love ❤️ this guy! We need more people like this on our team standing up for themselves
